Restoration measures or the planning of revitalization have been commenced for more than the half (53%), but the objective of regeneration of the typical raised bog vegetation and the hydrological self-regulation could be achieved only in less raised bogs, e.g. in the Grenztalmoor near Bad Sülze. Here, 13 years after begin of restoration measures, which included the establishment of a hydrological protection zone fully surrounding the bog, a regeneration process can be observed. A comparison of restoration efforts between the Grenztalmoor and the Dänschenburger Moor, two bogs with almost identical initial conditions concerning location and climate, shows the importance of a hydrological protection zone (HPZ). The HPZ of the Grenztalmoor reduced the run-off gradient of precipitation water between the higher lying peat remnant in the centre of the bog and the lower lying surrounding fen area. Parallel to the increasing water levels a vascular plant species assemblage and a diverse Sphagnum community developed. The impact of the lack of light because of high cover ratios of trees on the regeneration of a Sphagnum community typical of raised bogs as well as the effect of lack of water due to high evaporation of trees or unfavorable C/N ratios are always the result of the achievement or non-achievement of a water-saturated peat remnant by a reduced run–off gradient.}, note = { \url {http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7288}}, }
