Peatlands are explored with boreholes for the purposes of pedological and geological mapping. The peat has to be identified and classified on the basis of criteria which are recognisable in the field and require no additional laboratory analysis or binocular or microscopic analysis. This premise considerably reduces the number of analysable plant constituents. This report looks only at the peat types and plant constituents that can be identified in this way, and includes supporting photographs. This method closely follows the pedological mapping instructions (KA 5). Instructions on the verifiability boundaries of peat and plant constituents dependent on the degree of humification are also provided. The drilling method usually used in peat bog mapping and the accompanying problems are also discussed.}, note = { \url {http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7317}}, }
