In 1936/1937 already first cultivation experiments with mixtures of Weihenstephan’s loam and weakly decomposed bog peat (white or blond peat moss) as “standard soil” were conducted. These were the predecessors of today’s professional growing media, produced in the growing media industry. The focus for many years was on the nutritional demands of the different cultivated plants from all sectors of horticulture. The development of manufactured growing media for cultivation independent from the soil had a high importance in the research work of the institute. Within this work all kinds of growing media whether pure mineral based, synthetic or of organic base were included. The very special merit of the institute is the practical orientation of its research and its close relationship with professional horticulture and growing media producers. The research papers of the scientists are mentioned and the importance of the results for horticulture are recognized. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7224 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
