%X Abstract: However by colonisation and utilization the once very large-area peatland not only has become decimated in the dimension, but also has got degraded until today by negative influences. Conservation programs, legal protection and renaturation measures could stop the continuous degeneration as far as possible in single areas, but in part only with rather poor results. Against the background of the overfertilizing of inland and coastal waters, the problems with change in climate and the always getting worse usefulness moor grassland an actually program for protection of peatlands was developed. By a better financing, supported by the EU, combined with many years of experience with the realizing and effects of different measures and by developing new methods for peatland renaturation last years a few sustainable rewetting projects have been taken with good success in short time.
