%X Abstract: A survey of the Association of Peat Extraction Companies in Niedersachsen (BTH in IVG) was conducted in December 2011 and January 2012 to gain an in-depth picture of the resource situation. The results of the survey reveal the current and future situation of the peat industry. The secure peat reserves of the whole of the federal republic of Germany are also shown because, with the exception of a few small peat extraction areas in other German states, peat is exclusively extracted in Niedersachsen. The survey was conducted at almost all of the peat extracting companies in Niedersachsen. Figures were collected on aspects including the size of the current extraction areas, and a forecast of the amount of peat to be produced from these areas every year between 2011 and 2040. There is also a discussion of the development of peat extraction in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the start of peatland protection measures, to provide a background to the secure volumes of resources still available to the remaining extraction companies for the future extraction of peat until the middle of this century.
