The proportion of grassland-based dairy farming as the most important land use practice on peat land is decreasing. Other options for land use are either economically inefficient, like suckled calf production, or are in an early stage of development, like the production of biomass for energy. However, keeping the fen grasslands as a part of the farming enterprise has some advantages as well. These include considerations of forage management as well as receiving subsidies within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy. We conclude that - in comparison with other federal states in Germany - conditions in Mecklenburg-West -Pomerania are favourable for concepts that are aiming at integrating socio-economic and ecological aspects of farming on peat land. This would include the protection of land resources as well as the maintenance of sustainable and profitable farming in the region. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7292 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
