An alternative sustainable use of re-wetted peatlands is paludiculture. This article presents an overview of relevant research projects and selected findings. Biomass from naturally developed or artificially established vegetation is applicable for different forms of utilisation. Technical solutions for harvesting of biomass from wet peatlands are available. Several recent projects are orientating on further technical improvements. Calculations have shown that paludiculture can be a cost-effective form of land use. A very favourable climate balance can be achieved since emission reductions are gained by re-wetting degraded peatlands as well as by replacing fossil fuels with biomass. Some remaining questions will be addressed within a recently started project (VIP – Vorpommern Initiative Paludikultur). One of the main targets of this project is the improvement of the legislative and economic frameworks necessary for further implementation of the paludiculture concept on a larger scale. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7293 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
