A range of measures have been implemented manually since the 1970s to improve the hydrological situation of the bog. In the last two years, the three peat-cutting sites which strongly drain the bog have been chambered with large peat dams, and numerous ditches have been filled. This work was carried out using a mechanical excavator. Young birches were completely removed from a central part of the Mecklenbruch. A stand of spruce trees was removed in the north-eastern part of the area, and the trees flown out of the bog by helicopter. Stands of older trees were thinned out at other locations or cleared from small areas. Eight permanent water level gauges with automatic data loggers record the hydrological changes in the Mecklenbruch. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7306 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
