In such ditches in the Naturpark Drömling (Saxony-Anhalt) we found 201 species of macroinvertebrates and 149 species of macrophytes. According to the German Red List, there are 29 endagered species amongst them. For further 19 species, endangerment is supposed. This amount of Red List species emphasizes the supraregional importance of these water bodies. The physical and chemical status of the ditches depends on the intensity of the grazing cattle in the surroundings. Temporary grazing improves the ecological conditions by diversification. On the other hand, a too high intensity of grazing leads to an ecological impoverishment. The relative high load of plant nutrients in the ditches is not totally reflected by the plant communities; some aquatic and semi-aquatic communities are indicators of only slightly loaded water bodies. To maintain the pond-like ditches which tend to land up, the following measures should be combined: removal of mud, temporary grazing, and input of herbivore fishes in low abundances. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7340 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
