The initial focus was on the cultivation and use of peatlands. It took another 80 years for the idea of peatland protection to mature into the Lower Saxony Mire Conservation Programme. The programme started with the elaboration of the basic principles such as the recording and evaluation of the geological and biological aspects. This then led to the formulation of the conservation objectives for raised peatlands. The programme was implemented in 1981 and has proven successful. It is therefore essential that the programme is continued. The main priority in future will be the rewetting and renaturisation of former peat extraction areas. In total, more than 100 000 hectares of raised bog could be developed in Lower Saxony. The 25 year old Lower Saxony Peatland Conservation Programme already incorporates the key aspects of the globally valid “Wise Use” for Mires and Peatlands Concept formulated in 2002. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7359 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
