%X Abstract: Thüringen is not known as a territory of mires, but in the past there were a lot of them, mostly little ones. Peat have been mined for fuel in 1830 to 1875. This period of mining and shortly after the two world-wars remove mires from the thuringian landscape. Nearly all mires are of Holocene age and their existence is bound to special geological structures beneath them. All of the former states in Thüringen are engaged in winning peat. Therefore its economical use will be described depending on the political structure before 1918.
