In West-Siberia a high diversity of mires has developed, often as complexes of different types. Peatland research started after 1918 and has always been strongly associated with resource exploitation (peat, oil, gas). In recent decennia human impact on the mires has increased. Despite that Russia generally has a well developed network of conservation areas, less than 1 % of the West-Siberian mires are protected. Since the last 10 years an increasing international cooperation with respect to mire research and conservation can be observed. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7380 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
