Therefore, this study presents the methodology for the development of a GIS based peatland database in the river Stör catchment (1769 km2) in Northern Germany. The database combines information about the distribution of minerotrophic and ombrotrophic peat soils, the river network, subbasin hierarchy, geological and soil substrate distribution in the surrounding upland, land use, distribution of ecological valuable habitats, distribution of species rich wet grasslands, species distribution maps, administrative data, and legally protected areas. According to the database 18 % of the peat soils are used as fields. Ecological valuable habitats were mapped on 13 % of the peatland area. Only 3 % of the peatland area is legally protected as nature reserve. Such database queries support the selection of most sensible sites for nature conservation and water management. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7381 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
