The development of the fen was reconstructed from the analysis of pollen and macro botanical residues. Lacustrine sedimentation began in a small area during Preboreal times. The fen almost reached its present day extent during Boreal times. During the Atlantic period and sometimes beyond, growth of the fen stopped for a few thousand years in response to unfavourable hydrological conditions. Peat accumulation started again in some parts of the fen during the Subboreal and up to the early and middle Subatlantic period. The anthropo-zoogenic degradation of woodland from the Middle Ages up to modern times increased the runoff of precipitation. This raised water levels in the Hunte floodplain and boosted peat accumulation in large parts of the fen. The dating of basal layers in the Pestruper Moor and the downstream Poggenpohlmoor indicates that the Hunte already had a meandering course during the Late Glacial, and that the present day floodplain of the river Hunte had already formed during the Younger Dryas. %U http://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gldocs-11858/7383 %~ FID GEO-LEO e-docs
