Abstract

Rewetting in combination with paludiculture is crucial for restoring ecosystem functions of peatlands while allowing economic use. However, paludiculture requires shifts in agricultural practices that can affect the livelihoods of farmers, which leads to diverse social and economic outcomes. Therefore, this research addresses the question: How do farmers practicing paludiculture and those engaged in non-paludiculture activities perceive the potential outcomes associated with the implementation of paludiculture? This question is explored through a case study in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research highlights positive outcomes including improved food security, enhanced fishery resources, reduced floods and forest fires, increased educational opportunities, and potential for cattle rearing and hunting. However, it also uncovers negative outcomes such as exclusion of non-participating farmers, economic inequality, dependency on external support, and regulatory burdens. The severity of these outcomes varies; economically advantaged men benefit more, while young female farmers face challenges such as land ownership and income limitations. Similarly, small-scale, low-income farmers encounter significant obstacles. Age and education influence adoption; older farmers with limited education find it harder to acquire necessary skills.
