N2  - Abstract: The International Peat Congress (IPC) has a long history. It is the prime scientific event of the International Peatland Society (IPS) and has been organized every fourth year since the first meeting in Ireland in 1954. The 15th IPC was different from all the previous Congresses. For the first time the IPC was organized in Tropical Asia – in Kuching, Malaysia. The Congress was a platform for highlighting the characteristics, importance and problems of tropical peatlands. In addition the large role of Asia as a market area in international trade became clear.
N2  - Zusammenfassung: Der International Peat Congress (IPC) findet seit dem ersten Kongress 1954 in Irland alle vier Jahre statt und hat somit eine lange Historie. Zugleich ist der IPC die wichtigste wissenschaftliche Veranstaltung der IPS. Der 15te Kongress unterscheidet sich von allen vorangegangen Kongressen durch den Tagungsort in Asien – in Kuching, Malaysia. Der Kongress diente als Plattform, um die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen, die hohe Bedeutung aber auch die Probleme der tropischen Moore auszuführen. Weiterhin wurde die große Bedeutung Asiens als Markt und als internationaler Handelsplatz deutlich.
