N2 - This paper deals with results on the diaspore bank of a Bavarian mire under peat exploitation. The peat material containing the seed bank is the top spit, i.e. the uppermost layer of the mire, from which peat could not be extracted by cutting or milling. Therefore this layer, referred to in this text as the vegetation horizon, has been removed and refilled in former peat cutting areas. It is assumed by some people in peat industry that spreading of this material on the surface of recently milled peat areas facilitates recolonization by the plant cover of an intact mire. Therefore, the diaspore bank of the top spit was investigated as to its species composition. The results were as follows: Only the species occuring in the current vegetation, a dry heath (Calluna vulgaris, Molinia caerulea, Campylopus pyriformis, Cephalozia connivens), formed a significant seedbank or diaspore bank whereas, with the phanerogams none of the species from the former Cotton-Grass-Sphagnum peat forming mire vegetation were present in the seedbank. In the diaspore bank of the cryptogams, however, various peat mosses occurred (Sphagnum angustifolium, S. capillifolium, S. cuspidatum and S. magellanicum) though there were very few shoots in comparison with other mosses. Here new shoots developed from stems which appeared brown and dead or from protonemata. It is therefore possible that a diaspore bank of peat mosses exists consisting of spores. Further investigations will be required to establish the type of diaspores of the other mosses, be they spores or vegetative diaspores (stem particles or any gemmae etc.).
