All documents on GEO-LEOe-docs are freely accessible, i.e.readable und downloadable worldwide, free of charge and without registration. A large part of the content is Open Access in the narrower sense by CC-BY licence or designated public domain mark. GEO-LEOe-docs recommends granting the CC-BY 4.0 licence when submitting a document.

Geoscientific works can be published online on GEO-LEOe-docs as first or second publication. Compliance with good scientific practice is required for all publications.
Learned societies and scientific institutions are invited to independently publish their series, journals and other information resources in their own collections. The FID GEO team offers various forms of support and cooperation for this purpose. (Mail to fid-geo-digi@sub.uni-goettingen.de)
All documents published on GEO-LEOe-docs receive a DOI if they do not already have one.
Published documents are not deleted, in rare cases, for example infringements of third party rights, the document will be withdraw. This will be displayed under the URL of the document. For corrections on the document we use versioning, a new document can be uploaded and both versions can be accessed. However, subsequent additions and corrections to the metadata are possible on request.
The simple rights of use to be granted to the operator of GEO-LEOe-docs can be viewed in advance under Deposit License. In doing so, you also declare that you are authorised to publish the respective work and that you do not infringe any third-party rights.
To upload your publication, you must register with your name and e-mail address.
The format of the files should be PDF or PDF/A, and should not contain print protection or other usage restrictions.

The descriptive metadata are generated as follows:

(a) (partially) automatically, for secondary publications where identifiers such as DOI or PPN allow metadata import, or for items submitted through DeepGreen.

b) manually by the publishing person.

c) incase of digitisation by the FID GEO and, if necessary, in individual cases by staff of the SUB Göttingen.

The operator of GEO-LEOe-docs, the SUB Göttingen and thus ultimately the Göttingen University, has committed itself to the long-term storage and permanent provision of the documents published on GEO-LEOe-docs. A minimum storage period of 10 years has been promised to the DFG. However, it is intended to keep the documents available for a much longer period.

The content is archived on servers of the GWDG (Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen, a joint institution of the Göttingen University and the Max Planck Society), see http://www.gwdg.de/archivierung.

The underlying software is Dspace (open source), currently in version 5.11-SNAPSHOT.

The metadata follow the Dublin Core Schema.

The metadata can be retrieved in full via the OAI-PMH interface (harvesting). Thus, the publications appear in BASE and other search portals.

Furthermore, a SWORD interface is available, which can be used for larger document deliveries via DeepGreen, for example.

As a central publication platform and Open Access server, the repository was developed within the framework of the project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2004-2007 to establish the "Virtual Library GEO-LEO". The project partners at that time were the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) and the University Library of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Both were responsible for special collections in the DFG's programme for the supraregional supply of literature and information in the geosciences, which was reflected in the collection structure of the repository.

When the project ended, GEO-LEOe-docs went into routine operation at the SUB Göttingen, where the publication platform was first modernised in 2012 in the course of a complete renewal.

In the meantime, the repository has become part of the information infrastructure of the Specialised Information Service for Geosciences (FID GEO), which is operated as a DFG-funded joint service of the SUB Göttingen and the Department of Library and Information Services of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam since 2016. With the expansion of GEO-LEOe-docs to the subject repository of the FID GEO, the underlying DSpace system was relaunched, accompanied by functional innovations and conceptual changes.

The presidium of the GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation, which is borne by the majority of geoscientific societies in Germany, accompanies the development of the GEO-LEOe-docs repository as an advisory board of the FID GEO.

An important cooperation partner for the use of the repository continues to be the UB Freiberg, currently in the form of the FID Montan located there.

In addition, there are currently cooperations for the use of the repository with individual professional societies, such as the German Geophysical Society (DGG) and the German Society for Moor and Peat Science (DGMT, German section of the International Peatland Society IPS), the UNESCO "Global Geoparks Harz . Braunschweiger Land . Ostfalen.", as well as with the ARGE GMIT and various research institutions (such as the Institute of Geography and Geology at the University of Greifswald and the Geozentrum Nordbayern at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) in Germany.

There was an initial cooperation with Geozon Science Media UG for several years, until the publishing house was dissolved. As a spin-off of the Institute of Geography and Geology at the University of Greifswald and an open access publisher for geosciences and environmental sciences, Geozon delivered all its aggregated and refined publications for archiving in GEO-LEOe-docs.

Since the test phase of the DeepGreen project, GEO-LEOe-docs has been acting as a cooperating repository with this Open Access hub, and meanwhile receives extensive deliveries of geoscientific articles from the publisher Wiley through DeepGreen.
