Geophysik der Eifel-Maare

Abstract

Mit Hilfe geomagnetischer Messungen in Kesseltälern im Vulkanfeld der Westeifel konnten 15 bisher weitgehend unbekannte Maare nachgewiesen werden. Der Vergleich mit magnetischen Anomalien von acht jungen Maaren (mit Kraterseen) aus dem Vulkanfeld der Westeifel sowie mit der Anomalie des 1977 entstandenen Ukinrek-Ost- Maares (Alaska) ergab, daß hochwertige magnetische Störfelder auf zusedimentierte Schlackenkegel in den ehemaligen Kraterböden bzw. auf Randintrusionen im Schlot hinweisen. Danach sind fast die Hälfte der untersuchten Maare nicht rein phreatomagmatisch entstanden, sondern weisen während den Eruptionen oder am Ende der Eruptionstätigkeit „normal" entgasenden Magmenaufstieg auf.

Abstract: In the volcanic area of the Westeifel the results of geomagnetic surveys within local crater-shaped enlargements of valleys prove the existence of 15 maars which have been unknown so far. Taking into account the magnetic anomalies of eight young Westeifelian maars (with crater lakes) and the anomaly of Eastern Ukinrek Maar, which was formed in 1977, it can be inferred that strong magnetic anomalies are associated with sediment- covered scoria cones on the former crater bottom and/or with marginal intrusions within the diatremes. This leads to the conclusion that almost half of the investigated maars do not have a solely phreatomagmatic origin, but exhibit normally' degassing rising magma during the eruptions or during the final stages of eruption activity.
